The team, here at Canadian POS Corporation, has long encouraged retailers from all over Canada to take advantage of our e-commerce solution. That’s because online shopping continues to grow in popularity with each passing year. By now, it should go without saying that people love to hop on the internet, browse products, compare prices and make purchases directly from company websites.

Who can blame Canadian consumers for loving to shop online?

It’s an incredibly convenient way to make purchases. This is especially true for individuals who aren’t particularly big fans of getting in their cars, driving to malls, searching for parking spots, wading through crowds, searching for the right products and standing in lone line-ups to pay for them. Sure, this may not be the case with every shopping experience. But the description is certainly accurate during the holiday season.

With March now here, we’re officially two months removed from the end of the holidays. And, last week, the first-ever eCommerce Holiday Index for Canadian Retailers was released. Published by Absolunet, which is one of Canada’s main e-commerce agencies, the report covers the findings of online shopping studies conducted during this past holiday season.

E-commerce revenue grew 53% compared to 2016 holiday period.

As Bernard Dahl reports on the Absolunet website, Canada is proving to be home to some of the world’s biggest online shoppers. According to the study, e-commerce revenue was up 53 percent during the 2017 holiday season compared to the year before. In addition, Canadians spent more during their online holiday shopping adventures than their American counterparts.

As Dahl reveals, the average order value of Canadian online shoppers was higher than the average order value of American online shoppers. One of the reasons for that may lie in the fact that mobile transactions are more popular than ever. They doubled this past holiday season when compared to the holiday season of 2016.

Charles Desjardins is an Absolunet Partner and Executive Vice President. “Most retailers in the index had their biggest eCommerce holiday season ever in 2017 and have adjusted their 2018 and 2019 targets for continued growth,” he explains in Dahl’s article, “It is difficult for Canadian retailers to find realistic and credible benchmarks against which they can measure their performance – which is why we created the Canadian Holidays eCommerce Index.”

How did Absolunet compile their data?

According to Dahl, Absolunet’s eCommerce Holiday Index for Canada used data from over 30 Canadian merchants and outlined five key performance indicators for any e-commerce initiative: traffic, conversion rate (CVR), transaction volume, average order value (AOV) and revenues.
