On behalf of the entire Canadian POS team, we would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! Here’s hoping this long weekend will be one when you get to spend quality time with your family and friends. No matter how you choose to celebrate (or not celebrate), we wish you a fun and relaxing weekend and additional day off of work.

The way we see it, there’s no wrong time of year to give thanks. And, as a Canadian retailer, it should be part of your daily job to show your gratitude towards your customers. After all, what would your business be without them? To celebrate the forthcoming Thanksgiving weekend, let’s take a look at some thoughtful ways to show thanks to your customers.

Give a “just because” gift.

As mentioned, Thanksgiving isn’t the only time of year when you should be thankful. Surprise your loyal customers by popping a little something extra in their shopping bags. It could be a sample of one of your products, a gift card or even a free non-business related gift that you know will put a smile on the face of each person who gets it.

“If your budget allows you to give more than just a sneak peek on a new product, go a step further and give your top customers a free gift,” suggests Ally Scott of Pulse Marketing Agency, “This could be a gift card to your store, one of your products, or it could be gift unrelated to your brand. This proves that you are not just showing appreciation to try to gain their business—you are truly thanking them with no strings attached.”

Make a donation in their honour.

Thanksgiving is just the first of several special celebrations to take place over the next three months. This is a time of year when being generous is especially welcomed. An amazing gesture would be for you to make a donation to a charity that is beloved by one or more of your top customers. You’d be hard pressed to find a more sweet and sentimental way to show your gratitude.

“Make a donation to a local charity in honour of your most loyal customers,” agrees Lisa Furgison on FiveStars.ca, “Send them a text or an email to let them know the good news. Show local customers that as they support you, they also support the community.”

Offer a free upgrade.

We all know that there’s no one who doesn’t like getting something for free, right? However, you may operate a business that provides services instead of selling items. In your case, free upgrades may be in order.

“Treat customers to an upgrade,” encourages Scott, “If you offer a service, bump them up a notch. If you’re offering a special discount on an item, offer a deeper discount to your loyal customers.”

Write a handwritten note.

You may think it sounds cheesy, but in 2019, when most people don’t use pens and paper anymore, a handwritten note is a very touching gesture. “In a digital world, handwritten notes show you care,” notes Furgison, “They’re a great option for sales and service-based businesses. Send a thank you after a sale, or after completing a service for a first-time customer.”
