Welcome back to the Canadian POS Blog! This is our first entry of 2019 and, on behalf of the entire Canadian POS team, we hope it finds you well. You’ve now had a week to get used to the fact that it’s a new year.  But you have an entire twelve-month period ahead of you to ensure that your company outdoes the successes it enjoyed in 2018.

How do you plan on making 2019 your highest sales year to date? In today’s blog, we’ll tackle a few of the best ways retailers can improve upon last year’s sales numbers.

Grow your personal relationships with customers.

Yes, it’s a new year, but it’s important that we highlight a point that we’ve made numerous times before. Developing strong relationships with customers is a key to business success. In today’s world, consumers find it important to enjoy their buying experiences and not just the merchandise they buy. By getting to know the supporters of your brand, you’ll be able to better serve them as well as endear them to your specific store for their future shopping needs.

“Forward-thinking retailers are upping their game though omnichannel shopping, speedier order fulfillment, and competitive pricing,” writes Francesca Nicasio on VendHQ.com, “And while you should certainly consider implementing the same things in your store, don’t forget that connecting with customers in a personal and relevant way continues to be the best way to get them to know, like, and trust you.”

Market to Generation Z.

We know. You’re just getting used to figuring out these millennials. But, believe it or not, there is another generation already on the horizon. Known as Generation Z, individuals who are born between the mid-90’s and mid-2000’s make up an important demographic of consumers. As Lilach Bullock explains on Forbes.com, it’s wise to address the concerns of this young group of people to boost business in 2019.

She notes that members of Generation Z “were born with access to incredible technology and grew up using social media, smartphones, online shopping and all kinds of other technologies (and) also care a lot about worldwide issues and their own impact on the world…The secret stands in understanding who forms this generation and what they care about – the more you learn about them, the easier it will be to come up with the best approach to sell to them.”

Re-energize your employees.

Your company’s reputation will almost always be defined by the attitudes of the people who work for it. Many of your team members may be feeling the drag that comes along with coming off of a joyous holiday season. It’s your job to motivate them and constantly boost morale in the work place to ensure they’re treating your customers as excellently as possible.

“It’ll be challenging to achieve record-breaking success if you don’t have your employees backing you up, so set aside some time for a motivational speech,” advises Nicasio, “Recognize the great things that people achieved in 2018, and encourage—or even incentivize—them to do better. Why not offer rewards to your associates who bring the most delight to customers?”

Offer payment options.

As always, it will remain important for you to allow your customers to pay for their purchases using the payment methods of their choice. That includes credit cards and debit cards, of course!
