Amazon probably needs no introduction. The world-famous online shopping entity which specializes in electronic commerce and cloud computing became the most valuable retailer in the United States last year. It can be argued that one of the reasons the company has become so massively successful is its innovative methods of encouraging shoppers to make purchases directly from its website.
After all, Amazon is an online-only retailer known for giving savvy consumers the ability to take advantage of great deals. The company’s Prime memberships offer online shoppers exclusive deals that are especially inviting on its annual Prime Day. Yesterday marked Amazon’s second-ever Prime Day and it absolutely shattered sales records! Giving Canadians the ability to begin shopping as of midnight PST on July 12th, the event offered new deals every hour.
“Prime Day is a one-day-only global shopping event exclusively for Prime members,” explains Amazon’s Canadian website, “With thousands of amazing deals worldwide, members get exclusive access to the biggest discounts on things they need across nearly every product category.”
So just how successful was this year’s Prime Day? According to today’s Amazon press release, “the second annual Prime Day was the biggest day ever for Amazon. Amazon today announced customer orders surpassed Prime Day 2015 by more than 60% worldwide and more than 50% in the U.S. It was also the biggest day ever for Amazon devices globally and record Prime Day for each Amazon device category including Fire TV, Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers and Alexa-enabled devices.”
CNBC’s Krystina Gustafson points out that Prime Day was already a record-breaking day a year ago when it surpassed Black Friday as the largest sales day ever. This year, “Amazon sold more than 90,000 TVs and more than two million toys on Prime Day, reports Gustafson, “Ordering on its mobile app also accelerated compared with the prior year, increasing more than two times among Prime members.”
Amazon also reports that Prime Day was a big success for small businesses that used their site to sell their goods. According to their press release, “Prime Day was another record-breaking success for the sellers and small businesses worldwide participating in the event. Small businesses and sellers on Amazon offering deals to Prime members saw orders nearly triple year-over-year on Prime Day – both worldwide and in the U.S.”
