Loving couples all over Canada are preparing for their annual celebration of togetherness. In less than two weeks, Valentine’s Day will be here! As a Canadian merchant, this is excellent news. This time of year comes second only to the end-of-year holidays when comes to craziest shopping frenzies.
So, as we recently pointed out in our blog, it would be in your best interests to prepare your store for Valentine’s Day. One great way to do that is to make gift cards available to your customers. Gift cards, believe it or not, make awesome Valentine’s Day gifts. And there are several reasons why.
We know what you’re thinking. Giving a romantic partner a gift card is lazy, thoughtless and even insensitive. However, there are countless lovebirds who would disagree with you. “I know my girlfriend loves Sephora,” commented one of our colleagues last week, “But she knows I know nothing about makeup. I often get her gift cards from that store, knowing it’s her favourite. She always loves it and thanks me for NOT buying her the makeup directly.”
“A gift card can transform itself into anything the receiver wants it to be…that’s the beauty of it,” Marisa Losciale reminds us on DailyDot.com, “So when the giftee finally spends it on the hotel deposit, face mask, Nintendo Switch controller, sneakers, gel manicure or whatever else they may be eyeing, they’ll be feeling gratitude all the way.”
To reiterate an earlier-made point, you may assume that gift cards make bad Valentine’s Day gifts. However, a 2014 survey conducted by GiftCards.com says otherwise. According to Shelley Hunter, the website asked its nearly 500,000 Facebook followers to share stories about their worst Valentine’s Day gifts ever received. The list included everything from toilet seats to toy monkeys that poop candy. Gift cards were nowhere to be found on the list.
“Not surprisingly, a big ‘NOTHING!’ topped the list of bad love gestures,” Hunter reports, “Sure, you can say it’s a manufactured holiday to feign disinterest, but watching the gal next to you get showered with roses while you sit empty-handed can be rough.”
In 2020, not all gift cards are plastic rectangles. Electronic gift cards take the physical card out of the equation without discarding any of the benefits. “Instead of having to go to the store to purchase generic prepaid gift cards, eGift cards allow you to do everything online (including card personalization),” explains Losciale, “Plus, since you’re sending it over it the internet, you won’t need to pay for postage either–all you need is a valid email address.”
